Last week, I downloaded Groove 2.0 (27MB) and Java 1.4 SDK with Forte CE (66MB). Played with these for 3-4 days. Verdict? Uninstalled Groove, kept Java.
My short summary on both these are below. Note that these two belong to two entirely different classes of software. I’m not attempting to compare these, but just writing down my experience.
Groove 2.0
A distributed collaboration (peer-to-peer) tool.
+ Great interface.
+ Very good collection of tools.
+ Simple SDK for writing your own tools.
- Terribly slow. tested in 2 machines, one with 327MB RAM and one with 128MB. PIII 500MHZ and 750MHZ running Win98. (Information from Internet sources)
- 27 MB download is a bit too much.

Java 1.4 SDK with Forte CE
You know what Java is. Forte is Sun’s IDE.
+ I think it is faster than 1.3.
+ Very good collection of tools.
+ Forte is pretty slick.
+ Web start for installing things over the web.
+ Easy installation. No messing up.
- 66 MB download is a bit too much.
